I tried to install the .Net Framework 1.1 SP1 yesterday from Windows Update.
The process started and then hung. (Waited 3 hrs). Rebooted and tried
again today. Same problem, it starts then hangs. I downloaded the SP1
executable from MSFT Download center and ran locally. Same problem, it
unpacks, then starts the installer which begins the install then hangs.

I then tried to uninstall .Net Framework 1.1 from the Control Panel. I get
an error message:
Internal error 2711: S867460. The 867460 is the patch number for SP1.

So now I can't install SP1 or uninstall the original 1.1.

I'm running on Win2K Pro with SP4.

Can anyone provide a way out of this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ken

I went through the same process as Ken did and got to exactly the same
situation.
I'm running on XP Pro SP2 though.

I would join Ken's appreciation for any solutions.

Thanks,
Kevi

Ken and Kevi,

I had a highly similar problem with the SP1 setup.

The problem was a service that Windows could not start -- W3SVC (World Wide
Web Publishing) was listed as "starting" in the control panel services
applet. Disabling this service and rebooting allowed me to successfully
install .NET Framework 1.1 SP1.

Note that I still had to kill all non-Microsoft processes in order to
install successfully, but doing so never worked before I found the W3SVC
problem.

Hi Jason,

I tried and it worked!

Thank you a lot! Hope it worked out for Ken, too.

I had the same problem.
Also running XP with SP2 and Symantec Internet Security (the Windows
firewall is disabled)

After I installed SP2, startup was very slow. The system event log
told me that the The World Wide Web Publishing service (IIS) hung on
starting.
The problem here was that my firewall (symantec) was blocking IIS. So
I erased the IIS rules of the Symantec firewall. Then set the IIS
service startup to manual and rebooted my system. After reboot, I
disabled the symantec firewall and started the IIS service manually.
After this I tryed to install the .Net 1.1 SP1 and it installed
without any problem. :D

When starting the Symantec firewall again, a popup came asking to
create a rule for IIS, where I selected PERMIT. Now the IIS service
startup is set to Automatic again and starts without any problem. :D

Trying to install VS.net prerequisites (.Net Framework 1.1) on a
windows 2000 prefessional OS. My machine is just hanging. How can I
resolve this problem?

Thanks
