FQDN and ping

we recently set up DNS in our NT 4.0 network. When I ping
a host using the shortname we get a reply showing the
FQDN. Is there anyway that I can get this to just show the
shortname as well..?? So that the reply would show
Pinging "shortname" instead of Pinging "FQDN" Thanks for
any help
 
I think this is a result of Win2k using DNS for name resolution before using
WINS or Broadcast. I don't think it can be changed. Belive me it is a GOOD
thing. I don't think Node type will have any affect as this has to do with
WINS specifically. Any other thoughts fellas?

I agree Scott, it is a good thing. One way I guess, to get around it is to
remove the domain suffix in NT4's TCP/IP properties, DNS tab so it would not
suffix it, but then again, if the record is not in WINS or not found in a
broadcast, then it won't resolve. But I would leave it the way it is. I
wouldn't recommend removing that from W2k, W2k3 or XP since the netlogon
service on those OS's needs that to register into that same name DNS zone.

In addition to the other replies stating that this is a good thing (I agree;
your computer is using DNS properly), what is the reason you'd want to
change this?
