FP2003 - Open as HTML converts file to Rich Text Format????

I'm using frontpage 2003 to edit files which contain ASP code, which are all
named with a file name extension of .go instead of .asp - I've already setup
Frontpage to open .go files as HTML (which is the default option)... but when
I try to open the file in FP, it first converts the file to "Rich Text
Format" which is driving me crazy. To open an asp file with a .go extension,
I have to rename the .go file to .asp first, open the file in Frontpage, and
then save the file again as .go instead of .asp.

This is really annoying and a big time waster when working with large
numbers of .go files, etc. Any idea how to get FP to open the file w/o
trying to convert it to RTF????????

Oh. So it must be a Bill Gates Monopoly Extension?

I know you can concoct your own extensions, but this aint gonna work is
it?...or do you know what solution No Solution is trying for?

You can create any extension you want.
However:
It needs to be registered as a server mime type.
It needs to be associated with a program on a client computer.

So where will this get NoSolution on the web...he'd have to have the viewer
associate .go with a program on their computer right?... who would do that?
 
No, the server just needs to have the mime type set, a site visitor doesn't need to do anything.

FP default settings is to "correct" HTML in HTML pages. You can try
these. (FP 2003 shoudl have the FP200 settings soemwhere or the same.)

1. Check off Preserve Existing HTML. In FP200, Tools --> Page Options
--> HTML tab.

2. Verify that ASP is checked off on the compatibility. In FP200, Tools
--> Page Options --> Cobatability Tab.

Another option is to use a diffrent editor (other than FP) for editing
those pages.

FYI: Preserve Existing HTML is now a default setting in FP2003.

FP uses the file extension, and .go is going to be a problem.

OK, thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm not sure where or how to
register the server mime type - I'm assuming I'd do that in IIS, but I'm not
sure why that would work, because i'm just editing the .go files on a
disk-based FP site, not an IIS website.

There is nothing that you can set locally on a disk-based web. FP use the .asp extensions to know
that the file contains ASP code, and this can not be changed.

Why is .go extension being used instead of .asp extension?
