FP2002 Borders and publishing

For the site beatconscious.org, I employ a left side border and I'd like to
update the image map there ... haven't needed to update that in several
years. I've searched the discussion group posts on Border issues and don't
see this one discussed:

In my local web, I can see my hidden files/folders, such as the _borders
folder and it's contents. In the live/remote web, the border content shows
properly and in html view, I see that the content is being pulled from the
_borders folder. But I can't actually see the _borders folder in the folder
list -- just the _private folder. I wonder if this is down to the "show
hidden files" setting on the host server?

I'm asking because, in the local web, all files in the _Border folder show
that they are updated files which should be published ... I'd like to be sure
they'll publish properly even though I can't see that target folder on the
remote web.

Thanks if you can raise my comfort level that this will work out OK.

I think it depends on what host you have to see them via the publishing
editor fp./ftp client

however just view it on the browser

http://beatconscious.org/_borders/

you don't have a homepage in the folder so you can see the files directly
.... otherwise just put in the full path

http://beatconscious.org/_borders/left.htm for instance

btw .... instead of taking the time to find your email addy etc and give you
feedback since you disabled the form .. here is a little here...

make text links for your image map menu as well ... you don't have text
links on the image map

Client-side image maps also include redundant text links to ensure users
will be able to navigate through a site. When creating redundant text links
for image maps, create text that identifies the destination of each link
(i.e. Home Page, Search Engine, etc.)

incorrect
<area shape="poly" coords="185,0,355,0,295,123" href="a.html" alt="Link a"/>
<area shape="poly" coords="336,202,549,203,549" href="b.html"/>
<area shape="rect" coords="0,10,172,10" href="c.html" alt="Service"/>

correct

<area shape="poly" coords="185,0,355,0,295,123" href="a.html" alt="Link a"/>
<area shape="poly" coords="336,202,549,203,549" href="b.html" alt="Link b"/>
<area shape="rect" coords="0,10,172,10" href="c.html" alt="Service"/>

Plus make all the text that is smaller than the text at the beginning of the
site the same size as the beginning of the site text... .its way way too
small to read comfortably...

There is more but those are the two main accessibility and usability pita's
of trying to navigate and read your site.

hope this is of use

Thanks, Tina, very helpful and I appreciate your time to reply.

As another one who hears of the impending loss of FPSE from most hosts
(though my host says it is not imminent, I appreciate it is inevitable) I
have EW2 and am considering my options to redesign the BC site so that I can
replace this v. old site design (c. 1999) with something that meets the
accessibility / usability concerns you have identified. I just can't make
myself do the work to improve a site that needs to be completely recreated in
the newer software ... my bad.

I really appreciated your comment on the tiny type size ... I visit tons on
websites created using a smallish centered field in an otherwise empty
background, with type so small it makes my eyes bleed to read it ... I should
at least repair that part of the accessibility issues, since it has nothing
to do with site design. Thanks for the push in the right direction.

Well.. the best time to redesign a site is always 'right now' because the
site can only get bigger .. and therefore more work to do:)

how many pages do you have?

Did you know if you upgrade to ew 3.0 then when ew 4.0 comes out, you can
upgrade for free?
http://www.expression-web.net/expression-web-4-secrets-revealed/

All it takes is to get a good template... if you dont' want to design one
there are good free one's...

we have some free Site Templates
http://www.frontpage-to-expression.com/site-templates/

and more here by Pat Geary
http://www.expression-web-tutorials.com/ew-templates.html
http://www.genealogy-web-creations.com/css-layouts/

which you can tweak to your colours and graphics, then its just a matter of
cleaning your site and popping the pages into the new design ... use a dwt
and css. (which version of fp are you using?)
