fp2000 global replace

Sorry if this problem has already been addressed. I haven't logged on for a
while.

I have inherited a large web site, but I have to change the name. The
obvious thing to do would be a global replace and change the name every time
it appears on a page, but FP 2000 does not have a global replace. It only
has a global find. It will list all the pages where the text to be replaced
is found, but then you have to click on each page in the listing three times
to do the replace. I wouldn't mind if the site did not have 2,000 pages.
That's a lot of clicking.

Wally

That is your only option with FP2000 and personally I prefer this over the a
one click global replace which change things the you didn't intent to
change.

Note: You can do this folder by folder.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that even if you go folder by folder,
you still have to click two or three times for every page in the folder. The
site is being revived for reference only, and if a few extra things are
changed, it won't be a big deal. I can always correct errors as they are
caught, but with more than 2,000 pages to change, it will take me a long,
long time to go through the entire site.

Wally

Once you start, you would only click once to make the change and then to
save the page for each page.

Anyway, the next option is to upgrade to FP2002 or FP2003.

If it is just a text change (known string) on a local copy of the web, use a 3rd party text replacer like
http://www.tildemh.com/sw/btrwiz/download.shtml
Then reopen the web in FP and run a Tools Recalculate Hyperlinks

Thanks again. That's still 4,000 clicks. Would upgrading solve the problem?
Do either of these versions have complete global replaces? I have been
hesitant to upgrade because I see so much on this newsgroup about problems
with FP2002.

Wally

If you upgrade to FP 2003, you can do any kind of search and replace that
you can imagine, including using Regular Expressions, specifying whether to
search tags only, tag content only, etc.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds like what I need, but unfortunately, I get a
"Page cannot be displayed" message when I try to log onto the site. I'll try
again later.

Wally

Thanks for the reply. The reason I never upgraded to FP 2002 was that I saw
so many complaints about it on this newsgroup. And the websites I manage are
mostly articles and photos, no drop-downs or shopping carts, etc, so FP 2000
has been adequate until now. Is FP 2003 as trouble-free as FP 2000? And will
2003 actually do the replace without my having to click on each page in a
list?

Wally

Hi Wally,

Trouble-free? Well, I suppose that depends on you, and what your definition
of "trouble" is. it is by far the best version of FrontPage developed to
date, and can do a whole lot more than previous versions. You should check
out the Microsoft FrontPage web site to find out all about what it does. As
for the search, it is a true global search/replace utility, and can be
customized to virtually any type of search/replace that you could possibly
imagine. And no, you don't have to click on any pages in a list. :)

Try to find a freeware programme called "Lightning Search". if will globally
replace throughout all the documents.

Wally,

Personally I use FP2000 over FP2002 for all development, and currently
looking to see if I will move production work to FP2003

Thanks for the reply. I have already tried http://www.tildemh.com/, but I
got the same thing. What would I have to change on my firewall? Are you sure
they didn't go out of business? Anyway, iCarte Lightning did the trick, and
it's also free. But I'm curious about the firewall bit.
