I'm trying to recover files for a colleague. She has some FP, version XP
projects that she would lke me to find.

How are the projects stored?

What file extensions are used?

Thanks for your help.

FrontPage normally stores "projects" in webs. The location of a web
is entirely (almost) up to the user.
The default locations are:
Server based webs (where a web server is present, and assuming Windows
XP Pro):
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\projectname where projectname is the name of the
web.
For Disc based webs:
%USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Webs\projectname - this location is
often changed by the user.

The most common extensions used in a web are:
htm, html, asp, aspx, pl, pm, php, hta, mdb, txt, csv, avi, wmv, mpg,
mov, rm, ram, wav, wma, mp3, gif, jpg, png, xml, wmz, js, css etc.
(this list is not exhaustive)

what "project" is she talking about.???

Frontpage creates web sites, not "projects".

It creates normal run of the mill HTML files.....

Ron:
Thanks for the reply.

I'm not a web page designer.

The file recovery program," Easy Recovery Professional", recovers files by
type. So, I have, for example, *.doc, *.htm, *.url, *.wav, *.mp3, and the
list goes on.

I was hoping for a file type such as *.frontpage [ 3 letter extension, of
course ].

Sincerely,

WC

Sorry for my generalised reply before. Frontpage does not use any specific
file type extension (such as *.doc in MS Word or *.xls in MS Excel) because
it creates and works primarily with *.html/*.htm files and many other files
as listed below. I would say it's primary 'file format' is *.htm as I
mentioned in my first reply, but FP works and can open and edit many other
files such as:

*. ASP/*.ASPX - Active Server Pages/.Net etc etc
*.CSS - Cascading Style Sheets
*.htm/*.html - HyperText Markup Language (web pages)
*.JS - javascript

and probably many more

Frontpage doesn't manage/create "projects". It creates individual files.
This collection of files is known as a "Web" or in Frontpage 2003, a "Site",
because ultimately, when published on the web, the files together will form
a "web site".

In order to recover the files your colleague has asked you to, use the
program to search for the above file types in the hard disk location below.

Generally, these "webs" are stored in "X:\my documents\my webs" where "X" is
your local harddrive (may not always be in this location, as you can store
Frontpage webs where ever you like just as with any other file).

Hope this clarifies the matter.

A web site consists of a many different files types and a multitude of
folders.
If you can find a folder named _vti_pvt, then this is contained in the
root folder of the website, and every folder and file contained by
this root folder is in the website.

Recovering a website by file type is a very difficult task, since even
in a simple web there are many different extensions - and some files
do not seem to

If the web has been published to the internet it can be copied from
the "live" web site. If the live site has FP extensions, open the
site in FrontPage and publish back to a folder on the PC, otherwise
use an FTP program to download the files - this will need some work to
restore navigation, shared borders and include pages if any of these
FrontPage components are used.
