Numerous attempts to install PNP Adaptec 4-port USB 2.0
card results in error. Here is some Q&A with Adaptec and
my computer OEM that provides detail. Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated!

Create-date : 09/18/03 15:35:21
OS : Windows 2000
Problem : 09/18/03 15:35:21 ardev1
Unable to install product;
tried both available PCI 2.1 slots;
tried with onboard USB enabled and with
onboard USB disabled and with onboard USB uninstalled;
Found New Hardware window with NEC PCI to USB OpenHost
Controller
displays; then FNH Wizard window displays Universal
Serial Bus (USB)
Controller - An error occurred during the installation
of the device -
The data is invalid.
The above repeats 2 more times ;
then sometimes FNH Adapted AUA-4000B PCI to USB
Enhanced Host
Controller; Occassionally FNH Wizard will permit me to
go thru pointing
to Adaptec CD (P/N 2033600 Rev A Ver 1.8) for drivers;
the Driver Files
Search Results displays "The wizard found a driver for
the following
device:
? Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller
Windows found a driver that is a closer match ....
this shows ( c:\winnt\inf\usb.inf )
If I check "Install one of the other drivers"
I always see
NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller - Microsoft - NEC -
c:\winnt\inf\usb.inf and
Standard OpenHCD PCI to USB Host Controller -
Microsoft - (Standard USB
Host Controller) - c:\winnt\inf\usb.inf
I have even downloaded the Adaptec drivers for this
device and pointed
wizard to those files on the hard drive ... same results
"The data is invalid."

Thanks in advance. Jerrold Meardon

Hello from Adaptec-

Thank you for your message. What is likely causing
the 'data invalid'
error in this instance is that the Permissions setting
within the
system Registry in Windows XP is incorrect and thus
will not allow XP
itself to install the adapter. This is not necessarily
limited to 1394
controllers and you may encounter this issue installing
other types of
adapters.

The Permissions setting is a function of Windows XP and
is therefore
not an Adaptec issue. This issue needs to be resolved
at the Registry
level and therefore it is ultimately an operating
system problem.

At the desk top select Start, Run and in the window being
displayed,
type regedit to run the Windows XP Registry Editor.

Navigate
to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\PCI .'

You will then see a number of keys in the form of "
VEN_xxxx ", where
xxxx are strings like "
1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04. " Under
each of these folders will be another folder with a
long numerical
name.
Open each folder and look for the "DeviceDesc" which
matches the
hardware you are trying to install (it should list the
device by name
-- Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host
Controller).
Now go back up and 'right-click' on the "VEN_xxxx" for
that device and
choose "Permissions."
Under 'Group or User Names' highlight "everyone" and
under 'Permissions
for everyone' choose "Allow" for the "Full Control"
setting.
Close Regedit, remove any errant listings for the card
in the Device
Manager and restart the system.

If this does not resolve the issue and installing the
hardware results
in the same error, then you may want to contact
Microsoft for further
assistance.

Hello from Adaptec

In response to your questions about the
USB2Connect AUA-4000A USB
adapter under Windows 2000

Your question: Thanks for the prompt response. The OS
is Windows 2000
Pro and not XP and therefore the "permissions" does not
function as
described. I did the attempted installs using a userid
that has all
administrator privileges in Win 2000. It appears that
there are
registry entries for the attempted install of the
adaptec 4000 even
though it has now been removed. The device desc is
cryptic and not
plain english.

Answer: If you are still getting the Data is Invalid
error message
when installing the drivers for the AUA-4000A USB
adapter the problem
is the same for both Windows 2000 and Windows XP. If
the permissions
suggestions do not help then the Operating System
manufactures support
should be contacted to work on the permissions
problem. Are you
getting the Data is Invalid error message when
installing the Adaptec
provided USB 2.0 driver? Or, are you getting the Data
is Invalid on
the Microsoft provided USB 1.1 drivers embedded into
the operating
system?

If you need further assistance please contact us again.

================
I have tried specifically pointing to drivers that I just
downloaded
from Adaptec and drivers contained on the CD provided by
Adaptec with the
Adaptec USB2 Connect 4-port USB 2.0 Card.

When the card is placed in an available PCI slot and the
machine is booted
(Windows 2000 Pro) the Found New Hardware window displays
three (3)
or four (4) times with the text "installing" on the
display. I believe
that it is automatically installing USB1.1 drivers ----
but in each
case I get the error
"An error occurred during the installation of the device
The data is invalid."

When I subsequently run the Hardware Wizard to Add/Remove
Hardware
Adapted AUA-4000B PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller it
detects
three Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller entries that
the
Device Manager lists under "? Other devices".

When I select the first (USB) Controller and click Next
the
Add/Remove Hardware Wizard display a Device status of
"This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)"

I click "Finish" which then causes the Upgrade Device
Driver Wizard
to be invoked. I click Next and the next display shows
"This wizard upgrades drivers for the following hardware
device:
? Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller

I select "Search for a suitable driver for my device
(recommended)"
and click Next

If I then select on the next display window either "CD-ROM
drives" where
Adaptec's CD is loaded or "Specify a location" where I
just downloaded
the USB 2.0 drivers from Adaptec for Windows 2000
and click Next

the Driver Files Search Results window displays:
"The wizard found a driver for the following device:
? Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller"
"Windows found a driver that is a closer match for this
device than
your current driver. To install the driver Windows found,
click Next."

"C:\winnt\inf\oem4.inf" <============================
"The wizard also found other drivers that are suitable for
this device.
To view a list of these drivers or install one of these
drivers, select
the following check box, and then click Next."
"_ Install one of the other drivers"

Note: It appears that both the C:\winnt\... is searched
and whichever
other location that I specified ---i.e., either "CD-ROM
drives" or
"c:\adaptec\usb" where there is recent download of drivers.

I check the "_Install" box and click Next.

The Upgrade Device Driver Wizard window displays
Driver Files Found
Which driver do you want to install ?
? Adaptec AUA-4000B PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
Description Provider Manufacturer
Location
Adaptec AUA-4000B PCI to USB Enhanced Host
Controller...Adaptec Inc ... Adaptec
Inc ... c:\winnt\inf\oem4.inf
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller ...
Microsoft ... (Standard USB
Host Controller) ... C;\winnt\inf\usb.inf

If I select the "Adaptec ..." from the list I see very
briefly
a copy operation feedback window folder to folder then the
Upgrade Device Driver Wizard displays
"Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller"
"An error occurred during the installation of the device"
"The data is invalid."

The above occurs whether I select "Adaptec ..." or from
the
"_Install one of the other drivers" or click Next to
install the driver that is shown that "Windows found a
driver
that is ...." ---i.e., c:\winnt\inf\oem4.inf

Note: the "Adaptec..." driver shows a location identical
to the
"Windows found a driver that is ..." ; both point to
the c:\winnt\inf\oem4.inf. A byte by byte comparison
comp c:\winnt\inf\oem4.inf c:\adptec\usb2
\adptusb2.inf /a /l
indicates that the file are identical.

It appears that the adptec drivers have been copied to the
c:\winnt\system32\drivers folder. I don't know if all
files
have been appropriately copied by the wizard as I don't
know how to interpret the oem4.inf == adptusb2.inf file.

Hi Jerrold,

I am not a hardware expert, and you have provided a lot of information to digest, so
I am not sure if this will help, but...

One of the symptoms listed in the following Article is "An Enhanced Host Controller
Interface-compliant (EHCI-compliant) USB host controller appears in Device Manager
with an exclamation point in a yellow circle, or with status code 28." The
resolution is to install USB 2.0 support in Windows 2000. For more information see
the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles:

KB319973 - Universal Serial Bus 2.0 Support in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=319973

And some comments on some of your post:

RE: "09/18/03 15:35:21... An error occurred during the installation of the device -
The data is invalid."

The only Microsoft Knowledge Base Article I can find with that exact error message
pertains to a Windows XP system that has been upgraded. I suppose that it does not
apply but you may want to read it anyway.

KB810882 - Error Message: Cannot Install Hardware. An Error Occurred During the
Installation of the Device
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=810882

RE: "09/19/03 05:33:19 dav21682... At the desk top select Start, Run and in the
window being displayed, type regedit..."

This should read, "... type regedt32 ..." You can not set permissions using regedit.

RE: "09/19/03 11:42:55 fike2419 ... did the attempted installs using a userid that
has all administrator privileges in Win 2000".

Doubtful that it makes any difference, but try doing everything related to the
installation and removal using the built-in Administrators account. From what I
have read some software manufactures hard-code the installation for this built-in
account. (The Advanced troubleshooting for Adaptec Easy CD Creator Software
Installation under Windows 2000 says "1) Make sure you are logged in as
ADMINISTRATOR, not just a user with administrative rights.")

RE: "This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)"

For more information see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

KB245386 - Windows 2000 Configuration Manager Error Code Meanings and Troubleshooting
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=245386 >

RE: "A byte by byte comparison comp c:\winnt\inf\oem4.inf c:\adptec\usb2
\adptusb2.inf /a /l indicates that the file are identical. It appears that the
adptec drivers have been copied to the c:\winnt\system32\drivers folder."

According to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

When you install an OEM driver, the Windows Installer program copies the OEM
oemsetup.inf file to the %SystemRoot%\INF folder, and then renames the
oemsetup.inf file to OEM#.inf, where # is an incremental number for each OEM
driver that is installed.

Shutting Down Your Computer in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=266169

And lastly, you can troubleshoot Windows Setup and Device installation using the
setupapi.log. Furthermore, if necessary, its logging level can be changed from the
default level to verbose if more information is needed for troubleshooting. For more
information see:
