What hardware "would" it detect if you let it complete successfully?

"New hardware" would also det4ct any other devices beside USB.

This can sometimes be caused by existing hardware or phantom hardware.

On one machine I had this problem with, we let it complete installation
where it just showed as an unknown device. Further investigation at a later
date revealed that it was the floppy disc drive. The only problem being
that the floppy drive already existed in device manager.

On another PC, it was a phantom COM1 port that installed, except that the PC
didn't have any COM ports.

Generally, the way to resolve this is to let it install to completion (or as
far as possible) and then go into device manager and disable the unknown
device or phantom device.

Occasionally, it can be a real piece of hardware that has just thrown a
wobbly. If you can't find the device and the PC still works, then don't
worry about it.
