Found New Hardware Dialog

At sometime in the past a USB device was installed incorrectly, as a
result each time I bootup Win 2000 the Found New Hardware dialog opens
and the New Hardware Wizard opens. I have to cancel the operation to
continue using Win 2000. I have opened Add/Remove Hardware and removed
the "Unknown USB" hardware entry in "Device Manager". Each tile I
reboot the Unknown Device reappears.

Is there someplace in the Startup sequence, or the registry I can remove
this annoying habit?

Thank for any advice,

Michael Gordon

To display hidden devices, non-Plug and Play devices, and devices not
attached to the computer (commonly known as "ghosted" or "phantom" devices)
From a command prompt;

set DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
then
start devmgmt.msc

Then, use Device Manager to remove or reconfigure these devices.

You can backup your reg and create the ERD beforehand by going to;
Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Backup, then choose ERD, then if you check
the box for "Also backup....", then the reg will also be backed up to
%windir%\repair\RegBack
leaving the
%windir%\repair\
directory files intact as original installation.

Hello Dave,

Thank you for your quick reply, I was not able to apply your suggestions
until late this evening.

I tried your instructions 3 times, and all 3 times the device was
removed from Device Manager until I rebooted the system, all 3 times the
device reappeared during bootup with the Add/Remove New Hardware Wizard.

I finally went back to Device Manager and disabled the device, now
during bootup there is no Wizard, but the disabled device is still
listed in Device Manager.

This is what Device Manager shows just under the Networking Device:

?Other Devices
?Universal Serial Device (USB) Controller

Then several devices below are listed the usual USB devices, they have
no errors.

Where do we go from here?
