My AVG scanner has placed the bridge.dll file in the vault. This file
was found in Windowns\downloads . what does this file do? Why does
the system need it or does it really need it?

everything i looked at in google suggests it's part of a trojan, not
part of windows...

and really, why would you assume a file in a directory called
"downloads" was part of the operating system?

It's an adware "Browser Helper Object".

See http://www.pestpatrol.com/pestinfo/w/winfavorites_bridge.asp

I'd also suggest getting, installing, downloading the updates,
and then running both
Spybot Search & Destroy from
http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
and Lavasoft's Adaware from
http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download/
