formulas don't work

Something strange is happening to a spreadsheet that I am
working on. Every time I try to add a formula to a cell it
stays as a forumla and does no calculations what's so ever
and yes I do have the = value in the formula bar. Is some
settings wrong? I even copied the whole worksheet and
pasted onto another spreadsheet and tried to calculate
formulas from another worksheet within that spreadsheet
and it did not recognize the values, it's like there's
nothing their, but there is. Please help me on this issue.

Goto to menu Tools | Options | View(tab) and uncheck 'Formulas'.

In Options > View

Uncheck Window Options Formula

In Options > Calculation

Check Calculation Automatic

If Matthew's suggestion doesn't do the trick, perhaps the cells were
pre-formatted as Text.

Go to Edit>Replace

Replace what: = sign
Replace with: = sign

Also, the shortcut for toggling View Formulas on/off is CRTL + `(backquote
above TAB key)
