formula question, parentheses (sorta newbie)

I've used Lotus 1-2-3 and Quattro Pro for years, and I'm somewhat new
to Excel. I'm using "Microsoft Excel for Windows 95 / Version 7.0".

When I enter a formula and the cursor is anywhere near the parentheses
they switch to bold and the cursor disappears for a couple seconds.

I find this *really* annoying and was wondering if anyone knows how to
disable this "feature".
 
Actually, it is highlighting what appears to be the mating
parenthesis. It is a way to help verify that you have entered them in
pairs. The more parentheses you have in a formula, the longer it
takes to parse. I do not think you can turn it off. In newer
versions of Excel they are also color-coded. The lag time seems to
have improved, though.

Yes, that's what it's doing.
