I've got a 4GB CompactFlash card that I'm trying to format through my card
reader/writer external unit.

I've tried a quick format and a full format.
When both formats are complete, the summary shows the correct figure for the
drive, but when I right click and view properties on the drive, the card is
showing as only 1.96GB.

What have I done wrong and what should I do to make the drive the correct
size of 3.**GB?

Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure if this is a limitation of FAT16. Try formatting it with FAT32
or with NTFS.

Bugger!

I've just realised that yes, the card must be a CFII rather than a CFI,
which means that the FAT32 it needs to read the full 4GB isn't supported by
my camera (I've just read that CFI is limited to FAT16, i.e., 2GB). Now I'm
going to have to format a partition of 1.96GB in FAT16 and lose out on an
extra 2GB (of much needed space).

Thanks a lot Currys. There was no mention of that on your website or with
the product when it came was there? Now I guess you'll tell me its too late
and because I've opened the packet and used it, you won't refund me?

Also cameras usually like cards to have a partition table. Right-click
formatting in Explorer doesn't usually put a partition table on removable
media.

Some things to try, format with 64kb clusters or two partitions. Both are
seldom supported by cameras, though.
