Does 'formatting' mean to erase? on this camera I just bought, I erased all
the internal memory pics I had in it. also, erased the pics on the memory
card. but there is an option in the camera to format it. I clicked ok and it
formatted it I suppose. Just what exactly did that do. I thought there was
not anything still on that camera as far as pics and stuff.
could I format using the pc. what is all this formatting do and why.thanks,
in advance. :-)

Do not format your camera memory card with your PC.
Format the card with your camera. When you format, you erase all pictures on
your memory card and you make the card ready for new pictures.

THanks Yves, Can you explain why not to format the SD card on the pc? Just
curios as to why not. thanks

The following article is specific for Sony Memory
Stick but could apply to other memory cards as well.
It's best to format in the camera or using the software
provided by the camera mfg.

You could use your PC to do this, if you select FAT or FAT32 file system.
Look in your camera manual, if they say you can, go ahead if you wish.
Too many different cameras and we can't know everyone. So the safe
recommendation is do it with your camera. It only takes a few seconds and
then no surprises.

I along with many others have also lost photos on their new digital cameras.
If and only if you do not try to record any further images it is possible to
recover 98% of the images"lost". Contact local camera or software shop for
recovery software. My wife nealy killed me when she thought I lost precious
photos.
