Formatting Type in Word

When I change the formatting of one line, even after
several "hard" returns, the new format changes the entire
document to that format. "Undo" will then change rest of
text back to normal and leave that one part of the text
in the new format......

This happens with font increases and decreases, font
style changes, color changes, bullets, etc.

For example, if I change the color of 1 word the entire
document changes to that color. Hit undo, and the
document returns to black except for the one targeted
word.

Thank you for your help!
