HI,
If you sure your PC is now free from virus, you can just perform a repair install of XP.
You can go to symantec.com to perform an on-line security scan to ensure your OS is clean.
How to perform a repair install of XP:
Boot into BIOS and set the CD-rom be the 1st boot device, then save and exit.
Boot with the XP CD in the drive. When you see the message on the boot screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so.
After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with the following:
To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R.
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
In your case, press ENTER.
Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8.
You will then be taken to a screen with two options.
To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.
This will bring you to a partition map where you can delete, create and format partitions.
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation.
Hope it helps.

I'm no expert -- an "end user" like you -- but I just did this recently, so
I can offer this advice. Go into your BIOS setup and set the PC to boot
from your CD drive. Then put the XP CD into the drive and reboot. You will
see a menu from which you and select to do a fresh install of Windows,
including reformatting the HD. Select to use the NTFS disk format.
You will need your XP serial number/activation code.
Be VERY SURE you have backed up all of your data because reformatting will
overwrite it all. Also, after the install is complete, go to Window Update
and download all the recent updates and patches.
When you are all finished, go back into BIOS and reset it to boot from the
CD.
Hope this helps.
