I'm trying to partion and format my 80 gig maxtor drive.
It is setup as slave on primary ide channel. I can format
it as FAT32 but when i try to format as NTFS Windows gives
an error failed to complete format.

Hi, Brian.

Are you sure you don't have FAT32/NTFS switched?

MS has restricted Win2K/XP's ability to format FAT32 volumes to no more than
32 GB. Larger FAT32 volumes can be used by Win2K/XP, but only after the
formatting has been done by another OS, such as Win98, which can format
volumes as large as about 127 GB to FAT32.

What formatting tool are you using? Many Win2K users still - nearly 4 years
after its debut - have not located Disk Management, the utility
(technically, a snap-in to the Microsoft Management Console) that replaced
the MS-DOS tools FDISK and Format.exe. One quick way to find it is to type
at the Run prompt: diskmgmt.msc

MS-DOS and Win9x/ME can't deal with NTFS at all, but you knew that, of
course.
