Hi, I am going to format my computer in the next few days
and I need to know what Windows updates I need. I am
planning to download it from Windows Update Catalog and
store it onto CD so I can use it again when formatting
computer. My question is what should I download? I have
XP OEM without SP1. I know that I should download from
RTM, but if I download SP1 pack from RTM, should I
download everything from RTM catalog, or download
everything from SP1 catalog, or both?

Go to the update site and look under OTHER OPTIONS in your
update History. There you will find all updates you
currently have installed. Just write the numbers down and
download them again to copy to CD.

But what if I haven't downloaded SP1 yet on my computer
that I haven't formatted yet. Do I still have to download
updates from the SP1 option?

If you plan on updating to SP1, do this first and then download all of the
updates for SP1. SP1 already contains all of the RTM updates that were
released prior to the SP1 release.

As a side note, when you format and reinstall, make sure that you disconnect
your broadband or standard dial-up modem while the reinstall and initial
boot takes place. Enable the built-in or your own Firewall before connecting
the modem. This is to prevent being infected with the Blaster Worm or
anything similar.

I would say it doesn't matter, because once you've
reinstalled windows and the downloaded updates, and scan
for updates, windows will tell you what you still need and
only suggest for download what you don't have already.
But if you plan to install SP1, I would install that first
since it contains some updates already and you don't need
to download these separate....like Ronnie said.
