formatting lost when doing an email merge

I'm trying to create a personalised email newsletter but everytime I merge
all the formatting of the newsletter is lost. It merges the fields but
things like graphics and font sizes are lost. I've tried saving the document
in different formats like html, even created a template and a background but
it makes no difference. Do you have any ideas? Can this be done using
Outlook? Any comments/suggestions are welcome.
