Formatting HD please help

Im a computer dunce and I need to format my hard disk, how
can I startup in dos, I did it with a floppy disk created
using the format tool but I couldnt achieve anything as it
said C: was an invalid drive. If Someone could please
explain to me slowly in leamans how to format my hard disk
it would be gratly appreciated.
 
first explain if you are planning to install win xp or other windows
version, and do you have a windows xp installation disk?
