formatting hard drive

I have tried to format my hard drive. A message appears
warning me that all data will be lost, and when I click
on Yes, it tells me that it cannot format the hard drive
and asks me to close open utilities or anything
displaying drive information.

I have no idea where to go from here in order to format
the drive, so any help would be appreciated.

You cannnot format a drive you are currently 'in'.

You must book with the XP CD, go thru the F8 to accept the EULA, and then
delete the currrent partition, create a new one and format it.

you may need to disable any antivirus or hardware monitoring software
