I have a DELL laptop with Windows 2000(NTFS)O.S. I want
to format the hard drive before installing Windows XP. I
have tried various syntax combinations and I am asked
to "enter current volume for drive C:/". Please advise
proper syntax and "current volume" to enter.
Thanks for your help

Just boot from the XP CD. During the first part of the install process
you will be able to partition and format the drive.

Hi, Jar_Head.

To format Drive C:, you must boot from some device other than Drive C:.

That's the way it has always been. Even back when we were using MS-DOS, we
had to boot from a floppy to format the hard drive. The operating system
won't obey the command to commit suicide, or to saw off the limb it's
sitting on, and that's just about the same as asking it to format the drive
that it has just booted from.

So, boot from the WinXP CD-ROM and follow the instructions. There is no
need to format the HD in advance. You will have to options to repartition
and reformat before Setup runs.
