Hi,

Am having a bit of trouble with XP Pro. Have found
recently that since upgrading from ME to XP I still have
ME's 'ghost' running in the background and is taking up
heaps of space so my laptop is really slow and cluttered
so have decided to format it for the 1st time in 3 yrs.
Only 1 problem though, I've never done it before and need
a step by step guide as to how to go about it.

Can anyone help. I've had some help from the Microsoft
Windows XP mag website but it doesn't really make much
sense to me, especially as I have never done it before (as
mentioned before).

I would be extremely grateful if someone could get back to
me ASAP as i need to do it pretty sharpish. I've got a
dead DVD-ROM and have just bought a new CD-RW and need to
install that!!!

Thanks

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.
2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.

just one slight thing that bothers me apart from all the
techno jarg (even tho i understand more than most).
If i unplug all hardware periphs, it means I have to
unplug my external cd-rw which is what's running the cd to
re-install as my internal DVD-ROM is physically, mentally
and literally DEAD!!!!
Figure that one out, smart arse!!

Don't really care for snide remark! Maybe someone else
will help you further.....I'm not!

Very appreciative aren't you. People try to help you and this is your
response?
