Formatting Excel Charts in Powerpoint

I have recently switched computers and am experiencing problems copying and
formatting excel charts in Powerpoint. I can copy them accross, but then I
can only move the table or expand them. What I used to be able to do was
manipulate the size of each column in powerpoint but this is now longer
available. I have tried pasting in with several different methods but nothing
seems to work. Any tips?

What did you do before to change the columns and what happens now when you do
it?

What version of PPT did you use then, what version do you have now?

Previously i was just able to move the column widths within powerpoint once I
had copied from Excel simply by clicking on them and then dragging them to
the desired location. I think the Powerpoint on the new computer may be a
slightly older edition which could be causing the problem, though i'm sure I
have done the same on this version of powerpoint previously.

When you say "column" do you mean a column of data as in a spreadsheet or the width
of a column in a column graph?

Also, let's find out what version it really *is* rather than speculating.
If there's a menu bar, choose Help, About Microsoft PowerPoint and let us know what
version it reports.

If there's no menu bar but instead you see a series of tabs across the top and a
largish button at left with an MS Office logo, then you have 2007.

Let us know which.

Hi Steve, with regard to the versions of powerpoint, the one i was previously
using was Powerpoint 2002, SP3. The one I'm using now is Powerpoint 2000 SP-3.
With reference to column widths, I was copying data from excel and copying
it into powerpoint. This came out as a table (no paste special was needed) in
powepoint and i was able to manually adjust the width of each column. Now, I
can only adjust the whole size of the table so all the columns have to be the
same size, whereas before i could have one column at say 3cm in width, and
then another (within the same table) at 5 cm in width.

Hope this explains the problem a little further??

Thanks for your ongoing support.

Bingo. I think that's got it. In 2000 and previous, pasting from Excel into PPT gives
you an embedded OLE object by default.

In 2003 (and I think this change happened in 2002) you get a Table instead, which is
what you'd have been used to.

To adjust the column widths and other formatting in 2000 and previous, doubleclick the
embedded OLE object (the thing you pasted) to activate it; the menu will change to give
you Excel's normal options. You can adjust the columns as you would normally do in
Excel. You might need to adjust the size of the object to accommodate changes to col.
widths.
