formatting drive with xp already installed

I have a problem formatting my drive with xp already installed on it. I can reinstall over the top but it doesn't get rid of the problems i've got so I need to know how to format the entire drive so i can do a clean install.

Disconnect everything from your PC except the mouse and keyboard and then
proceed with the clean install.
