I am trying to copy files from my Win2000 desktop to CD, but all the brand
new CDs I install are not recognized. The CD drive will read CDs with data
on them, so that much of the device seems to work. How can I format the CDs
so they will be recognized? I'm not sure if there is a dumber question, but
I have wasted the better part of an hour trying to find the answer, to no
avail, and my colleagues have ordered me out of the building since I was
yelling at the computer so much. Help!

You cannot format CDs. Use the program that came with your
CD burner to burn your CDs (e.g. Nero).

If your CDs are marked "CD-R" then you can burn them exactly
once. If they are marked "CD-RW" then you can erase them and
record new data on them.

Read the help files that were installed when you installed your burner.

Native Windows 2000 does not know how to write to CD. You require third
party software for that process. You need a CD drive capable of writing
CD's AND software to do it. Verify both criteria are met, and you will
be ready to go.

What about the Roxio Drag to Disk and I believe there is also a formatting
program with Nero. They are to be used with the dragging to disk intead of
burning a preset number of selected files from the hard disk. Not a thing
I
normally use anymore but still available.

You're quite right, of course - it's the In-CD feature you're referring
to. I did not mention it because I felt that it would confuse the issue.
