I am trying to format my hard disk so I can install a
fresh copy of the XP Pro operating system. First of all I
am unable to boot into the CD Rom. Secondly I am unable
to format the partition as it gives me an error saying

" Volume is in use by another process, format may run if
this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS
VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a
dismount on this volume?"

Can someone tell me what I need to do to allow me to
delete/format so I can install a new operating system?

Thanks in advance!

you need to enter your system bios (usually by pressing F2 or delete when
the computer starts.)

if you look around in the bios you will find a method of selecting the boot
device priority which is usually floppy drive by default. change it to cd
rom as the first boot device and save and exit set-up.

then look for a message on start up which says 'press any key to boot from
cd rom'

There's no need to change the boot device order as long as
cd-rom is listed before the hard drive.

previous comment rather obvious i think. hdd is usually listed before cd rom
so there is a need to change boot device order in 99% of cases.
