I am trying to help a friend who has thier computer so
hosed up it will not recognize the modem and other
functions. I said I would format the hard drive for
them. They gave me all of the discs. The problem is
that I cannot get the computer to format. I have done
this with windows 98 but not with Windows XP. Help!

Umm I'd go to bootdisk.org and get a bootdisk.

Then I'd boot to dos and run:

format drive:

I would be very careful not to format my OS disk by
accident.

-----------------

In XP you can right click My Computer and select Manage in
the contextual menu that pops up.

Then pick disk administrator, find the HD, enable it if
need be, then right click and pick format.

But I'm old school so I'd still use the boot disk method.

If the HD was NTFS formatted I'd use Delpart.exe to delete
it then remake it using format.

If I wanted NTFS back during install I'd select reformat
with NTFS.

Just boot from the CD and delete partion and format, should be straight
forward from boot onwards
