Boot to the XP CD.

You can't format your hard drive if windows is already using it. You are
trying to format the C: drive, presumably? This is where XP is installed.
If you want to reformat your hard drive and then reinstall xp you will find
the details on my web site www.freelanceit.glowinternet.com Click on the Win
XP faq button and then look for How do I reformat my hard drive with xp

Hope this helps
