formating an old hard drive

i have an old hp pavilion desktop. basically put it together with different
hardware. have a maxtor hard drive(6l020j1). recently installed windows xp
professional on it. it has crashed several times. i don't have a recovery
disk for xp or the hard drive. how can i get the hard drive formatted so i
can start from scratch.

Boot from the WinXP CD and start the install process. You will be given an
opportunity to format the drive.

when i try to boot from cd-rom with xp disk, it never asks me if i want to
format. am i doing something wrong?

You need to go through the options in installing Windows XP from scratch.
It will ask you, eventually, that it sees a version of Windows and whether
you want ot keep it or overwrite. When you choose the option to overwrite
.... it will ask for formating options.
