there should be no problem
but you will need to use NTFS if the partition is over 32gigs

Be careful you don't delete the Dell restore or diagnostic partition if
there is one.

No. Are you having a problem? If you're trying to do a format and
reinstallation, be aware that you can't format from within Windows, since
that would leave Windows without a leg to stand on.

Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS boot order if necessary to
accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a clean installation (delete the
existing partition by pressing "D" when prompted, then create a new one).

You can find detailed instructions here:

or here http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm

or here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/clean_install.htm

No, not true.

True, Windows can't create a FAT32 partition larger than 32GB, but it will
happily use one if you first create it externally,

Depends. Is the drive in a laptop, and does it have a special hibernate
partition? In other words, if you press the sleep button, does the laptop
save main memory, graphics memory, and machine state on the hard drive, then
shut off? If this be the case, then that partition may be specialized, and
not something you want to recreate, especially as it has to be done AFTER
partitioning and BEFORE formating.

If you are formating a Hard drive set up by Dell you may run into
problems with the MBR. You can contact Dell and they will give you the
Debug code to remove their MBR then the format goes smoothly.
