formated text to wingdings and can't get back to original font

I formatted all text to wingdings, closed file emailed it, opened it and
reformatted to arials and got just a square for every letter, no text came
back at all.

What did I do wrong

Simply Copy the whole word document and paste into Excel and change the font ..it works.. then copy back to word doc.
