hi my firends got **** loadsa viruses on his comp and i wanna sort it
out for him so how can i format hios hd then reinstall winxp?

Hi Wake,

Boot with the installation CD, make sure you have the correct Product Key
handy. Start the installer, agree to the license by hitting F8. At the point
where you choose the installation location, delete the existing system
partition. Then create a new one from the free space, format, and proceed
with setup.

Make sure you backup any data that your friend does not wish to lose before
proceeding with the clean installation. If he/she uses EFS, make sure the
certificates are exported to removable media as well or the files will not
be recoverable.

No offense intended, but, if your only solution to a virus problem is
to format the hard drive, perhaps your friend should either consult, or
take the computer to, someone who knows a bit more about computers.
Formatting the hard drive to solve a virus or spyware problem is rather
like using an axe to trim one's fingernails. Sure, it'll probably get
the job done, but it's rather messy...., and almost always unnecessary.

However, if that's what you want to do:

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

I second Bruce's comments and would add this. I see home users do this
reformat and reinstall repeatedly because they never secure the system
properly. I suggest your friend get qualified help to clean and fully
secure the machine. That includes a firewall, antivirus software, spyware
protection, all Windows critical updates, and ongoing maintenance.

In addition to Bruce's very pertinent post, just reading your message makes
me question your ability to do anything with a computer.
