Format Windows XP

Do I need to format to get windows to work with exe.files, can not run command.com dos goes away as soon as it appears, no desk top icons work and task bar lost all icons on lower right side , it appears to be a virus hitting exe.files?
 
I guess I can not use a wireless keybroad and mouse to get to my bios also

I just tried to type in msconfig in the run program but it still will not let me do anything, I put in the windows xp cd and it won't open it , it will read other options in the cd but not the install one and i do not see any format location on it

Viruses are one reason that the file association for EXE files can be
damaged. Most important is to check the system thoroughly for viruses and
to remove them completely if found. Removal may entail extra steps that the
user has to do manually. Details for the additional steps (if any) would be
outlined at the website for your antivirus program.

MVP Doug Knox has some fixes at his website that can restore the defaults
for some extensions (including EXE):

As far as command.com is concerned, use Start> Run and type in Command.com
(or cmd.exe) to bring up a command prompt window. Type your commands in
this window and press Enter to "activate" them. This window will not
disappear until you close it.

I tried that and as soon as the dos screen comes up it goes away also? I just tried ad a ware to remove spyware had 350 file infected but didn't or couldn't get them all. Looks like I will have to format my hard drive the best way to do it if I can figure out how , seeings I don't see a format in my windows xp disk

If you do need to format, make sure you back up all of your important data
first.
