Win98 is my current operating system. I would like to
wipe my current harddrive clean (ie. reformat) to remove
misc junk and install Windows 2000.

Could anyone provide me with the a step by step procedures
to do do this?

Any assistannce greatly appreciated,

Kelly

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Are you sure that you have miscellaneous junk that you need to wipe? There
are a lot of ways to get rid of debris that are cleaner and simpler than
reformatting. Unused applications can be uninstalled by more traditional
methods, such as Add / Remove Programs or the program's own uninstall
procedures. Some vendors know that their applications do not cleanly
uninstall, and provide directions on their web sites to remove their
applications. Now, if you * know * that there is kruft left behind that you
cannot seem to ferret out, and the vendor does not tell you how to remove
it, that would be different.

Also, do you have documents or other user data that you want to preserve.
Sure, you can back it up. But an upgrade avoids the need to restore, and the
risk that you might miss something.

Finally, why 2000 instead of XP?

Simply boot from the Win2K installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
