if i wanted to reformat the drive with windows xp on it (wanting to do a
fresh install as it is getting "bogged down") is there any way to protect
the drivers for the video card, cd burner and dvd drive? i have had this
computer for 3 yrs and have moved and unsure of where all the discs are with
drivers, etc. also i had a problem with the video card during the original
xp install.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Boot to xp cd,then install, delete partition (xp),then create, then let xp
reformat and install. You dont need original drivers from 3 years ago,
probably not even 3 months ago.The drivers/software is upgraded by the
mfg almost monthly,go to thier site for newest, put on cd if desired, also
if xp doesnt have drivers(usually does),open windows update for semi-
current.

With a format/install, you don't protect anything - nor do you want to.

Don't worry about drivers for your CD/DVD devices as XP will take care of
that. But you should ensure you have XP drivers for your other hardware
saved to a removable source to be installed as needed after the clean
install is finished. Everest is freeware app that can assist you with this

That's almost true, with a caveat: Sometimes the "old"
drivers contained little bells & whistles that the XP
drivers don't. Example, my laserjet CD has watermarking
abilities, etc, built into the drivers, but the XP defaults
only have the default features, none of the bells and
whistles.

It might be a little work, but chase down any such drivers
on the hd and back them up, IFF you cannot find the original
disks. Better to find the old disks though; IFF you don't
like the XP drivers, which will be fine in almost all of
your cases.

PS Don't bother telling me about all the watermark abilities
of the various softwares - that's why I chose to give only
one example - too many egocentrics live in this group.
