060511 Format Partition type vs security/performance

looking for the best way to re-install xp home sp2, on dell dimension 4300.

- unless also familiar with the dell, is it ok to re-install the op sys
from: fat32 & ntfs
to just 1 partition of ntfs?

- is that the best layout to have? (is a pc less secure with fat32)

- are there items in transfer wizard that would be just moving virus/spyware
to new pc. (am only moving system settings, but would like to know).

- are there any concerns for any kind of malware on hidden / sub portions of
hard-drive:
boot sectors etc. (is there a lo-level format/ other procedure to verify?)
thanks..

Thanks - good references to have.

As a rule, running with all NTFS partitions is more secure. However, I'm
not sure about the specifics--or for sure, just what Nastech is expecting to
have happen. If a complete format and reinstall of all apps and loss of
user data is acceptable, this is certainly possible. Additionally, it
should be possible to let the Dell utilities do what they wish, and convert
any fat32 partitions to NTFS after the fact. I'm not certain whether NTFS
security is set up the same way as it would be for an initial install onto
NTFS, in that circumstance, however.

NTFS is more secure, but far from perfect. See the discussion here:

thanks, am trying to put together 5-10 lists, of security/performance notes
(terms seem interchangable). Full aware of backing up system files, file
transfer wizard (e.g.: FTW: not sure what is secure / non-secure to
transfer, another item missed in "attention to detail").

Purpose: to get past all the hacks. items missed: no notice from:
Microsoft, ZA, Dell.. after MS XP home edition, os disk: "Repair", not
informed that (even though "Windows Update" buttons are turned on / active:
it still ain't happening.
Too many problems from that / combo of sequence of steps (not defined)
allowing security violations (including some I know about, 99 others don't)..

so far, have rough draft of about 3 PAGES of intense steps, tech
writ/condense 10:1 steps to 1 liner sequence of steps, for one procedures;
too much to review-try-verify, to have waited to reply. Purpose? don't know
if anyone realizes how never-ending the attempts are.
