Format Painter for Pivot fields (?)

Is there any way around having to format each data field column/header
by using the format painter? I currently have to set the data format
using "field settings". But, I can't get the format painter to work on
the field...it only works on the cells (and that changes if the pivot
changes.)
 
You can't use the Format Painter, but you could add the Paste Formatting
button to one of your existing toolbars (Tools>Customize, Command tab)
Then, copy a cell that has the formatting you want
Select the field where you want to apply the formatting
Click the Paste Formatting button
