Hi,

I am not a computer expert, I know a bit, but not techy stuff. Please bear
this in mind when offering advice. ie: Imagine you are talking step by step
to an idiot.

Anyway, Can you talk me through deleting EVERYTHING from my hard drive and
then re installing windows.

Or should I just buy a new hard drive and install windows on it?

I have an external hard drive where I have copied everything I want to keep.

Thank you.

Boot the computer with your Windows XP cd and after you press F8 to
accept the EULA (End-User License Agreement) you will be shown a list of
available disks and partitions on which you can install Windows. Select
the partition where you want to install and do a regular format (not
quick) on the partition. To boot with your XP CD you may have to go in
the BIOS and change the boot order so that the CD boots before the hard
disk.

When you install Windows you should only have the keyboard, mouse and
monitor connected to the computer. Disconnect all other external
devices, you do not want to have external hard drives, USB sticks,
printers, joysticks, etc. connected to the computer when you install the
operating system. These devices should only be connected after Windows
is installed and running properly.

Why do you need or want to completely remove Windows? What problem or
difficulties are you experiencing? More often than naught reinstalling
Windows is not necessary.

*MAKE SURE* that you have the product ID/License number before you
begin! Without this you will be unable to install and activate Windows!

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation,, simply boot from the WinXP Home installation CD. You'll
be offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as
part of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order
of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

HOW TO Install Windows XP

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications re-installed.
