I'm trying to format drive c because it got full of junk
and re install win xp home edition but whenever i try to
format it in dos this message appears: 'format not
supported on drive c. format aborted' or something very
similar. I'm using a win 98 booting floppy disk. If my
hard disk is write protected how can i turn the write
protection function off? I don't remember setting it to
that option. Plz help.

You'll need to first fdisk your disk. The windows 98 bootdisk should
contain fdisk. You'll need to delete the non-dos partition, then re-create
a new one.

Alternatively (and a bit easier) simply boot to your WinXP CD and delete the
partition and select the free space to install on. Format as NTFS and
you're on your way without the reboots needed by the Win98 bootdisk.

If your XP drive is formatted in ntfs then you can't format it with a win98
floppy boot disk. Either use fdisk, delete the partition, create new
partition, format to fat32, boot to xp cd format to ntfs, install. Or, boot
to the xp cd, delete partition, create new partition, format, install.
