I need a "Format Guide For Dummies". I need to format my machine and
have tried with information off the web. Started up with the disk in
but none of the instructions given from then on seem to work. Please
could some one give me some simple step by step instructions?

Thanks for the reply, have finally managed to format and re-install XP
but now my wireless connection is not functioning, can not turn it on
or off and the mute button for sound is not operating either. Ready to
throw the whole lot out the window.....

After you do a clean install, you need to then install drivers for all
your hardware. This includes the motherboard, sound, video, and network
adapters.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

Belarc still works fine here. Aida still works, but won't have
information about newer hardware. Of course, you could always pay for
Everest.
