format in excel does not carry over to access

In Access 2000 I use a table that is a spreadsheet linked from Excel 2000.
This procedure worked fine last year. I have checked all the formatting in
the spreadsheet so that each column is the same type of format. The main one
I'm having a problem with is a number format that comes across as a text
field. This paticular field is very critical in the queries stemming from
this table.

I've compacted/repaired the db. I was able to import the spreadsheet and
then go into the Table Design view and change the format from text to number,
and my queries work. However, I would prefer to link the table rather than
import it.

Thanks, Donna

What type of number format are you using in the Excel spreadsheet? Also, has
someone put non numeric data in the cells? This will cause Access to see it
as text. This can be a messy thing to deal with.

What I have done is write a routine that links the spreadsheet, deletes the
data from a predefined table format, then copy the spreadsheet data into the
existing table. You still may get errors, but the import error file will
tell you where they are and you can fix them.
