hi,

I have vista RC1 installed on C:\ (long story how that happened)...

anyway, i want to format and install XP, but after booting into setup, and
then formating the C partition, i get a drive access error. It just won't
format the vista drive.

But if i do a clean install of vista, from vista disk, its fine ..

So im assuming vista does something to prevent this? is it to do with the
permissions on the HDD set within vista? or something else?

I just really want to format the HDD and start again...

Thanks.

When you say C drive it means nothing. C from where? Do you mean the first
partition on the first drive in boot priority? Using the XP install CD, try
going into Recovery Console and doing a fixboot and fixmbr first. Then try
the install and point to the partition with Vista, delete, then reformat.
Remember fixboot will default to the system drive unless you specify another
drive. Make sure you point it to the Vista drive as ennumerated in the
Recovery console. Use the map command, hopefully you will be able to
recognise the partition and determine the letter assigned.
