Dear all,
I would like to format my hard disk but windows does not
allow me to make this operation. The message says that
the volume is in use by the system. I have tried to
dismount the system but does not work either. I have been
working on different options but could not solve it.

Thank you for your help,

VCP

Hi
Use a Win 98 flopy and start your computer, run FDISK,
DELETE the partition and then create a NEW partition.
Boot your computer with Win 98 flopy and type
FORMAT c: /s /u

First, note that reformatting your (one and only) HD will, effectively,
erase all files.

Next, since this is a XP NG, the best way to reformat your HD is to
boot from your XP CD. If you don't have a XP CD, don't reformat.
{If you have a recovery CD instead of a XP CD, that should also
reformat and reinstall XP, but it is not as flexible as a XP CD.}

Finally, I suggest that the best filesystem for any XP PC (other
than dual-boot PCs) is NTFS. Since FDISK does not support NTFS,
FDISK is not usually a good choice.

I have gathered from the information that you asked above,
that you not do this on your own for the first time. Ask
someone that is familar with this to come and show you.
You are going to get all kinds of different answers from this
newsgroup. Some true, some not true.
