format change in Microsoft Word?

I went to pull up an ebook of mine, and instead of seeing what normally comes
up, I got a bunch of symbols, numbers, and letters. The same thing for any
of my scans. The documents I wrote in Microsoft Word are all fine, but not
anything else. Everything was fine yesterday, and I even did a system
restore, but nothing worked. Any idea what is going on and how to fix it?
I'm not too computer savvy.
