I am having terrible problems attempting to install an
external hard drive, USB connection, One Touch Maxtor
drive. Device manager recognizes it but it is not mounted
and thus is not recognized by Windows XP Pro in my "My
Computer" area.

Anyone have a suggestion as to how to get the external
hard drive recognized?

Also, I don't know how to format the external drive.
Could someone enlighten me as to that procedure?

Thanks very much.

Start> My Computer> Right Click My Computer> Select Manage from the menu>
Disk Management. You can initialize and format the drive from Disk
Management.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. When I installed a Maxtor OneTouch, I was
lucky - I just followed the instructions and everything worked properly
first time.

Have you got the Installation Software CD, and did you remember to install
the software before connecting the drive to the computer?

The drive is formatted at the factory with the Windows Fat32 file system.
To format the drive to NTFS,which is perhaps the best way to go with WinXP,
go into Disk Management. In the window that appears, right click on the icon
for your new drive. Fat32 should be listed in the column labled File System.
Go to Format (from the Menu) and click on NTFS in the File System field.
Click OK and the computer will start the NTFS formatting process.

If you don't have a copy of the printed User's Guide, or the Documentation
CD (same information in both), there is a copy of it on Maxtor's web site.

Cycle.

i had a maxtor usb2 120gb i-touch that was seen by my computer but caused
system problems. for example it stops ntbackup. need to remove to get
ntbackup to work. what i did to get it to run correct was:
device manager...delete listings
add/remove;;;remove maxtor software
msconfig...startup...uncheck mxoaldr[ note uninstall leaves file so use
search to find and delete
then without the maxtor software plug in the maxtor and let windows find and
install. get the drive setup correctly. then use the computer management
to disk management and rt click use format and ntfs. the backup program
that comes with maxtor drive also cause caused a few problems and i took
that out. note also if your pc is a hp it has another program loaded called
one-touch. it is for the special buttons on keyboard and that also maybe
part of conflict.
