How do I have a form I've built, display without the access window, just like
a separate entity that can be brought up by a desktop shortcut
 
You can't do that - it is Access you're using. The best you can do is
remove all the Acces menus and toolbars, and maximize your form.

If you really want a standalone form/applicatio, you're using the wrong
tool. Try Visual Basic, or something else.
