My 9 year old daughter somehow got into the "user"
administrative section of XP and decided to put in a
password in to "keep her younger sister out." However,
since the computer has not been shut off in over three
weeks, she has not had to use this new password. She has
since forgotten it and XP will not allow me to go any
further than the "User Name" and Password section. After
so many tries, it locks me out. How can I restore to
original settings? I am not worried about files currently
in the computer, but would like to save them if possible.

Jeff;
The password is Case Sensitive.
Check Caps Lock and try various of Capital combinations.

Or
Log in to any account that has Administrator access.
Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel.
Select the user and change the password.

Reboot to Safe Mode, select Administrator, leave password blank.
Then go to User Accounts in Control Panel.
Select the user and change the password.
If you are using Windows XP Pro and have encrypted data, you may
permanently lose access to the encrypted data.

Here are other options:

Another option is to install Windows XP on another partition and take
Ownership of your data.
You could also perform another installation on the same partition,
although this is not a permanent fix and it is recommended to perform
a Clean Installation after retrieving your data.

After this is resolved, take precautions to not lose the password.
