for windows 2000, I forgot administrator password;
luckily I didn't have any data files on hard drive that I
need to keep;

do I have to reinstall Windows to be able to log on as
administrator? or is there other way of resetting?

--thanks

you don't have to restart . u can go in the safemode and
change it or make another user account
to go in safe mode >>
restart your computer and after 5 seconds "you may see a
table in the black screen " keep on press on the button F8
then chosse from the menu SAFE MODE

then it'll ask about the password u can cancel it then go
to comtrol panel and users account and make a new account

Hello,
Actually that's incorrect; you'll have to have the Administrator password to
log into Safe Mode (or even Recovery Console).

Is there another user account on the system with Administrative rights? If
so, just log in as that user, and forcibly change the Administrator password
via the "Users & Groups" console.

Short of that, the only method I can recommend to fix this is to perform a
reinstallation of Windows, which will allow you to choose a new Admin
password.
