In XP Home, boot the computer into Safe Mode. Do this by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up. This will get you to
the right menu. Navigate using your Up arrow key; the mouse will not
work here. Once in Safe Mode, you will see the normally hidden
Administrator account. The default password is a blank.

In XP Pro, you do not need to go into Safe Mode. At the Welcome Screen,
do Ctrl-Alt-Del twice to get the classic Windows logon box. Type in
"Administrator" and whatever password you assigned when you set up
Windows.

If you reset the built-in Administrator account's password in Home or
have Pro and don't remember the password, use NTpasswd to change the
built-in Administrator account's password to a blank.

Then go to the User Accounts applet in Control Panel and set passwords
that you will remember and make other desired changes.

Hi Maria, I too, now have your problem, did you find a easy solution? The NT
solution seems to complicated and desperately need to access my computer info
stored only for me. No one seems to be able to help, I also need to know if
you lose any work if a solution has been found. Hope you reply soon

By trying this step, it still did not bring me to the screen to allow me to
make any changes, I've been at this for two days, please help !

What step? Getting into Safe Mode? If you can't get into Safe Mode, either
use NTpasswd as previously suggested or, it this is beyond your skill level
(and there's no shame in admitting that since we all have our areas of
expertise), take the computer to a professional (not from a
BigComputerStore type of place).

Obviously you will need to get NTpasswd and create the bootable CD (by
burning an .iso image, not a data disk) from a working computer.
